How to Draw White Clothing.
Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners.
Reading time: 3 minutes
  • White clothing can feel tricky at first — I’ve been there too 🙂

But once you understand the logic, it actually becomes one of the easiest things to draw

    ❌ The most common mistake
Drawing white clothing as “empty space”. This makes the piece look flat and lifeless

✔️ How to draw white clothing correctly
If you are already studying fashion sketching, you know the basic algorithm:
    1️⃣ Draw the base layer
    2️⃣ Add soft shadows
    3️⃣ Add deep shadows
    4️⃣ Add details

But! when drawing white clothing, we skip the first step.
We DO NOT draw the base layer, and go straight to shadows ❤️

    As a result:
50–60% of the garment remains untouched
    40–50% is shaded
    (see attached images 👇👇👇)

And this can be the most difficult part. Your brain may want to either “paint everything” or “leave everything white”. But that balance is what makes white feel real.
  • Short formula:
White clothing = paper + 2 levels of shadows (soft and deep)

Step-by-step: How to draw white clothing

Step 1. Pencil sketch (base of fashion illustration)
Step 2. Skip the base color layer
Step 3. Add soft, low-contrast shadows
As if you are sculpting the form — defining the volume of the fabric and the body.

    ⚡️ Tip for drawing clothing:
if you don’t understand where the shadows are — find the lightest areas (convex parts, the center of the form) and darken everything around them

Step 4. Add deep shadows. As usual, place them inside the soft shadows
❌ If the garment looks too “empty” — this is normal. Do not overload the sketch
✔️ It’s better to lightly outline the garment with a muted grey pencil — this will bring the form together

    Step 5. Add accents. Done

  • Step 6. If needed, add prints, textures, and details

Yes! White garments with prints are drawn the same way!
The only difference is that you can leave slightly less “air”

  • Draw a couple of white outfits, send them to me for review, and I will point out the mistakes.
After 2–3 attempts, you will start to get it, because white clothing is actually easy.

✦ What colors to use in fashion sketching of white clothing?
  • It depends on:
    ■ Lighting
    ■ Fabric
    ■ Drawing style
    ■ Design goals

    Here are 3 basic options:

    Option 1. Classic (for beginners)
    • Light grey for soft shadows
    • Dark grey for deep shadows
    ✔️ fast
    ✔️ simple
✔️ suitable for technical fashion sketching

    Cons: less expressive

    Option 2. With a tint
Add a hint of color to grey (for example, I most often add a touch of violet)
    ✔️ more interesting
    ✔️ still simple

Option 3. Professional level (fashion effect)
    Separate the temperature of shadows:
    • Soft shadows → slightly warm (add a touch of ochre, pink, beige)
    • Deep shadows → cool (a touch of violet, blue)
    ✔️ adds depth
✔️ enhances the artistic quality of the work
